Another weekend... this one started Friday early afternoon, speeding to the JNB airport... We made it and caught the flight to Windhoek, capital of former German colony Namibia.
As in Africa people take their time, we spent after arrival an hour at customs, another hour at car rental (even though it'd been booked and paid in advance...). Then we fortunately got our tiny volkswagens (polo and jetta) ready to kick asses of the 4wheel drives. Really, we were little worried about the shape of the gravel roads on our way... :-)
We could not believe our eyes once we were getting into the rough nature. Scattered trees, sandy hills and a totally rough feeling... The air tasted so gooood!
It took us 5 hours to get to our remote desert lodge, on the way we met a herd of cows, road transformed into a river (it is a rainy period in Namibia...) and other things that kept us awake even after darkness fell.
We were warmly wewlcomed at the desert lodge, having a 11pm dinner :-), tasted so good after all the travel. And then, the desert night was coming. Could not resist and moved the mattress out on the sand, listening to sounds of the desert nature. It's as loud as dry. Geckos, hyenas, everyone surprisingly busy at night :-))
Next day 4:30 wake up call (by another hyena :-))) and we drove into a renowned oasis - Sousuvlei - wonderful spot with trees, water panes, dunes, wildlife.... Most of the pictures above come from there. Not only it was beautiful but also photogenic :-))).
Afternoon, we swam in a tiny pool at the lodge and then... set out for another destination - Swakopsmund. The paradise of all adventurers and all seals :-). The journey was scenic again... And in the evening we swam in terribly cold ocean :-) in the city that is said to be more German than Germany.... And it is true :-) Cozy, tidy, structured, friendly, organized, bookings required to get into restaurants.... Streets were called e.g. Bismarckstrasse... really cool to see that in Africa. And local (black) people speaking funny german!!! ....
We enjoyed wonderful seafood dinner (without a booking so had to wait for an hour in front of the restaurant...) and immediately fell asleep :-) the morning desert excursion was really exhausting :-)
And the next we went to see a huge seal colony. I tried to convince somebody to join me for quad-biking in the desert but everybody wanted to smell the seals :-) in the end, it was really exciting as these animals are having freaking fun all their lives. They don't use computers, don't wear ties, just keep screaming, fighting, stroking each other, .... Who do i want to be born in my next life?
Afternoon it was already time to go back... We flew through Cape Town as the flights from Swakopsmund are always fully booked (its a 30 person aircraft :-)))....
Another cool weekend....
